BRUSSELS, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The European Police Office (Europol) and Brazil on Tuesday signed a strategic cooperation agreement to expand cooperation in combating cross-border crime.
Europol director Rob Wainwright participated in the signing of the agreement with Leandro Coimbra, director general of the Brazilian Federal Police.
Europol said in a statement that the signing of the agreement concludes the successful negotiations between Brazil and Europol on how to effectively join forces to fight serious and organized crime.
The agreement will enable both partners to work on some key areas, including migrant smuggling, cyber crime, drug trafficking and money laundering.
It allows for the exchange of strategic and operational intelligence as well as information for both sides, with the exception of personal data.
The agreement will also lead to the secondment of a Brazilian liaison officer to Europol.
After entry into force of the agreement, this new level of cooperation will be important for tackling priority crime areas affecting both the European Union and Brazil, according to an official statement.
