NEW DELHI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- At least six girl students from a nursing college were killed and 14 others including a teacher injured, some of them critically, after a vehicle carrying them rammed into a roadside tree in western Indian state of Gujarat, police said Monday.

The accident took place near Ruparel village in Panchmahal district, about 138 km east of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

"Yesterday a utility vehicle carrying 20 people mostly female students from a private nursing college in Dahod district collided with a tree here and killed six of them, besides injuring 14 others," a police official posted in Godhra said. "All the injured were immediately hospitalised."

Police officials have registered a case and initiated investigations to ascertain cause of accident.

Reports said the girls were returning back after attending a seminar and cultural function.

"Preliminary investigation revealed the driver was negligently driving the vehicle at a much higher speed," the official said.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
