HO CHI MINH CITY, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam last year saw 7,981 workplace accidents which killed 862 people, injured 1,952 others, and caused property losses and medical treatment costs of over 179.4 billion Vietnamese dong (8 million U.S. dollars).
Most of the workplace accidents occurred in the fields of construction, mining, and building material production, the Labor Safety Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs said Monday.
Among localities nationwide, Ho Chi Minh City saw the biggest number of workplace accidents - 1,735 cases, followed by southern Dong Nai province - 1,286 and northern Quang Ninh province - 576.
The accidents in Ho Chi Minh City killed the most people - 112, followed by those in Hanoi - 78 and northern Thanh Hoa province - 64.
Among the accidents nationwide, 42.1 percent were due to faults of employers, 17.3 percent due to employees, and the rest due to other reasons.
Vietnamese investigation agencies prosecuted five workplace accidents in 2016, said the ministry.
