Spain's public debt stands at 99.4 pct of GDP in 2016

MADRID, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Spanish public debt stood at 99.4 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2016, according to provisional data published on Friday by the Bank of Spain.

This figure meant a 0.4 percent fall when compared with 2015 figure, when the public debt represented 99.8 percent of the country's GDP.

Spanish public debt stood at a total of 1.107 trillion euros (1.183 trillion U.S. dollars) with Spain's central administration debt reaching 796.62 billion euros, 71.5 percent of GDP, and the debt of Spanish regions stating at 276.89 billion euros, representing 24.9 percent of GDP.

Meanwhile, the debt of Spanish local governments stood at 32.09 billion euros, representing 2.9 percent of GDP and the debt of the Social Security system stood at 1.33 billion euros, accounting for 0.1 percent of GDP.

The 2016 figure meets the Spanish government target and will be sent to the European Commission on Friday. (1 euro=1.07 U.S. dollars)
