HARARE, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Game rangers on Tuesday shot and killed two poachers during a contact in Zimbabwe's largest game sanctuary Hwange National Park, an official said Wednesday.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo told Xinhua that the rangers, who were operating with the police, recovered an elephant carcass, three pairs of tusks, two elephant tails and a rifle at the scene.

"According to particulars of one of the poachers, it was concluded that he is from Nkayi (Zimbabwe) while the other could not be immediately identified because he had no identification particulars on him," she said.

Rangers have over the years killed poachers, many of them from Zambia, during shootouts in parks estates.

At least 443 Zimbabweans, 31 Zambians, seven Mozambicans and one South African were arrested for wildlife- related offences in 2016 and 57 people were sentenced to at least nine years in jail each as the country intensified its anti-poaching campaign.
