SOFIA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than three quarters of Bulgarians support their country's membership in the European Union (EU), a survey showed here on Tuesday.

According to the nationwide survey conducted by the Exacta Research Group in the last week of December 2016, 76.8 percent of those polled support the country's EU membership, while 13.2 percent disapproved it.

Meanwhile, 59.4 percent of those polled support the country's NATO membership, while 21.6 percent opposed to it.

In February 2016, an Exacta Research Group survey showed that the support for EU membership was 69.8 percent, while 20.3 percent disapproved it.

In the February survey, 52.5 percent of Bulgarians supported their country's NATO membership while 29.4 percent disapproved it.

The difference was even bigger compared to March 2015 when 41.6 percent of the respondents supported Bulgaria's membership in NATO and 35.4 percent opposed.

Global challenges and the proximity of Bulgaria's location to an instable area made an increasing number of Bulgarians believe the country's security can be ensured if it remains within NATO, the Exacta Research Group commented.
