BRUSSELS, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission said on Monday that it would invest over 432 million euros (455 million U.S. dollars) to extend the Warsaw Metro.
The European Commission said in a statement that the major project adopted for Warsaw would link the eastern and western parts of the city.
The investment will finance the construction of six new metro stations. It will also finance the construction of a technical terminal, the purchase of 13 new trains, and preparatory works for further extension of the line.
Works are expected to be completed by November 2019.
The Warsaw Metro currently consists of two lines. The first segment of Line 2 opened in 2015, with European Union (EU) financial support.
Sustainable urban mobility is a pillar of the EU's low-carbon economy strategy. The European Commission aims to increase low-emission mobility and create a better quality of life for commuters.
