NEW YORK, Dec 6 (Xinhua) -- An original musical about Jewish people seeking refuge in Shanghai during World War II showcased in the Edison Ballroom near New York's Times Square was performed Tuesday night, attracting an audience of more than 200.

The musical, "Shimmer," was the first-ever production between Chinese and Israeli artists and a bilingual show performed in both Mandarin and English.

According to show writer Guangrun Rong, the musical was based on the true events of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution who found refuge in Shanghai. The Chinese welcomed the Jews into their homes and communities.

The show eulogized the profound friendship between the Chinese and the Jewish people, and their joint struggle against fascist aggression, Rong said.

"There are still many people around the world who don't know this piece of history," said Qiyue Zhang, Consul General of China in New York.

"Through the new and wonderful story-telling form of a Broadway musical, more will learn the story of how the Chinese people developed such deep-rooted friendship with other peoples," she added.

"This musical is part of a cultural bridge between our two countries, and that's exactly what is needed," said Rabbi Arthur Schneier, president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

The showcase earned lasting applause from the audience.

"It was a powerful musical, the story was very touching," said audience member Lance Joe. "It is about friendship between the two nations which is a message of hope and peace." Enditem
