BUDAPEST, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- About 20 Hungarian police officers left for the Serbian-Bulgarian border on Monday to help prevent migrants from crossing.

It's the third group of Hungarian police team to be engaged in the mission of protecting the Serbian-Bulgarian border, since Hungary started the mission on Oct. 24 under a cooperation agreement among the Southeast European police forces.

They are replacing the second batch, which will return from Serbia on Tuesday.

Janos Balogh, chief of the Hungarian Police Force's Emergency Services, told the group that their mission was to assist the Serbian police, who are combating illegal border crossings with unprecedented intensity.

Serbia's borders, said Balogh, are under pressure from migrants coming from both Bulgaria and Macedonia, and it has set up a multi-layer border protection system in which Hungary is helping.

He also said that lately there has not been significant increase in the number of migrants in Serbia, partly due to cold weather. So pressure on the Hungarian border is expected to ease.
