BUCHAREST, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- A man from Chile, pursued internationally for alleged embezzlement after he escaped with 920 million U.S. dollars, was captured in Brasov, announced on Saturday police representatives from the central city of Romania.
Police officers from the Criminal Investigation Service in Brasov caught in a city mall on Friday night the man of 41-year-old who ran with money several people had invested in his company.
"Judicial authorities in Santiago de Chile have issued international arrest warrant for this man, for embezzlement," said the Brasov Police, adding that the man was detained for 24 hours.
The Court of Appeal in Brasov on Saturday will issue an arrest warrant effective until the completion of extradition procedures.
The man named Rafael Garay was wanted by the authorities in Chile on Sept. 12. There was information that he might be in France, Thailand or the Netherlands.
In late September, the man was located in Romania, after having requested the Embassy of Chile in Bucharest a certificate for marriage.
According to Chilean media, the man ran away with 920 million dollars, which belonged to several people who had invested in Think&Co Company owned by Rafael Garay.
In June, Garay announced that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and will close the company for undergoing treatment. He also said that people will recover money from an account at HSBC Bank, but people soon found that Garay had no account at the bank.
Garay is known in Chile for advice on how to invest money. He graduated from the University of Development in Chile and has a doctorate from Leiden University in Spain.
