Myanmar parliament calls for bold steps in legal protection

​NAY PYI TAW, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's parliament has called for bold steps to amend or revoke all the laws that fail to serve public interest as part of enabling the people to enjoy the full benefit of legal protection, according to parliament sources Friday.

Addressing a function marking the International Day of Democracy on Thursday, Speaker of the Parliament U Mann Win Khaing Than urged participants to continue to work for the people through their selfless efforts, emphasizing that the people are always at the forefront of building a developed, democratic federal union.

He pointed the need for mutual trust among the national brethren, describing racial and religious prejudices as detrimental to freedom, justice and equality.

Speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) U Win Myint reiterated the notion that all good governments originated from the people is basic democratic principle, stressing that all power is vested in and derived from the hands of the people and adding that "the government serves the people, not vice versa".

He called for continuous efforts to ensure the rule of law and promotion of human rights.
