China sees less workplace accidents

Source: Xinhua   2016-09-05 20:18:54

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The first eight months of the year saw 23 major workplace accidents, which resulted in 348 people left dead or missing, the work safety watchdog said Monday.

The data represented year-on-year decreases of 11.5 percent and 32.8 percent, respectively, according to the the State Administration of Work Safety.

In China, an accident killing over 10 people, injuring over 50 or resulting in more than 50 million yuan (about 7.5 million U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses is classed as major.

Most of the accidents happened in road, coal or water transportation, according to the watchdog.

Despite regular calls by the government for more focus on work safety, tragedies still occur. A lack of safety awareness, poor regulation and lax implementation of safety measures are among the factors leading to the accidents.
