Vietnam sees slight decrease in bad debt ratio in June

HANOI, Aug.12 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam saw a slight decrease of bad debt ratio in June compared to the previous month, according to Vietnam's central bank on Friday.

In June, non-performing loans (NPLs) accounted for 2.58 percent of Vietnam's entire banking system's total outstanding loans.

The figure of NPLs as of the end of May stood at 2.78 percent of total outstanding loans, said the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV).

In the first half of 2016, the state-owned Vietnam Asset Management Company (VAMC), which is established to deal with bad debts, bought 241 trillion Vietnamese dong (over 10.8 billion U.S. dollars) of bad debt.

According to the central bank, as of July 29, Vietnam's credit growth reached 8.54 percent compared to the end of 2015. The country targets to post some 18-20 percent of credit growth in 2016.

Deputy Governor of SBV Nguyen Thi Hong said that in the remaining months of 2016, the SBV will continue to control credit growth of the country's credit system to secure safety and effectiveness.

The credit source will be focused on production area, especially agriculture, exports, supporting industry, small and medium-sized enterprises, high-tech enterprises and start-ups.

Vietnam set a threshold of 3 percent of bad debt in 2016.
