At least three killed in suicide bombing attack in Baghdad

Source: Xinhua   2016-07-24 15:38:30

BAGHDAD, July 24 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and 11 other were wounded in a suicide bombing attack in the holy Shiite district of northern Baghdad on Sunday, a police source told Xinhua.

The attack occurred during the morning rush hour when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a crowded checkpoint at the entrance of Kadhmiyah district, killing at least three people and injuring many others on the site.

The blast also destroyed part of the checkpoint's building, and damaged many vehicles.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for such suicide attacks, targeting areas where crowds of people gather, including markets, cafes and mosques across the country.

Iraq has been hit by a new wave of violence since the IS terrorist group took control of parts of Iraq's northern and western regions in June 2014.

A report by U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) estimated that 662 Iraqis were killed and 1,457 others others were wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict across Iraq in June alone.
