ANKARA, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Turkey has not confirmed reports that Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) commander Fehman Huseyin was killed in an attack in northern Syria, a government spokesman said on Monday.

"There is information that Fehman Huseyin was killed. There is information from the news and intelligence channels. However, this information has not been confirmed yet," Numan Kurtulmustold, who is also deputy prime minister, told reporters after a cabinet meeting in Ankara.

"We will make our official announcement after confirming this information," he said.

On Saturday, Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency quoted a military source as saying that Huseyin was killed on Friday night in a bombing attack on his car.

The source added that eight other people were also killed in the attack.

Huseyin, also known as Bahoz Erdal, was born in 1969. He has been a member of the PKK's three-men Executive Committee since 2004.

Some Turkish security analysts have alleged that Huseyin may be the leader of the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), a youth group of PKK, which has conducted several bombing attacks against Turkish soldiers and police in the Turkish capital of Ankara and the biggest city of Istanbul this year.

More than 40,000 people have lost their lives in clashes with the PKK since 1984, when the group first started anti-government attacks.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Turkey.
