YANGON, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Tourist arrivals in Myanmar in the first five months of this year dropped by thousands as compared with the same period of last year, U Myint Htwe, Director of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, said on Tuesday.
Over 1.8 million tourists visited the country as of May this year. However, Myanmar targeted 5 million tourists to enter the country in 2016.
In 2015, 4.68 million tourists visited Myanmar, less than the expected number of 5 million.
Myanmar expects the number of tourists to reach 7 million in 2020.
The country is trying to develop the country's tourism sector as a priority in its National Export Strategy.
Meanwhile, the country's Tourism Master Plan (2013-2020), which was compiled with the support of the Asia Development Bank and the Norwegian government in 2013, is also underway.
