BERLIN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- German exports remained unchanged in April, while imports fell, widening the country's trade surplus to a new record level, official data showed on Thursday.
In seasonally-adjusted terms, German exports stagnated in April, following two consecutive months of growth in February and March. Meanwhile, imports declined by 0.2 percent month-on-month, said German federal statistics office Destatis.
Germany's trade surplus, the balance between exports and imports, widened to 24 billion euros (about 27.2 billion U.S. dollars), the highest level on record.
Compared to April 2015, German exports increased by 3.8 percent in April 2016, while imports did not change. The export growth was mainly due to strong demand in the European Union (EU). Exports to countries in the EU jumped by 7.3 percent, while exports to countries outside the EU decreased by 0.7 percent.
