Gong Li (b. Jinan, Shandong
province, 1967) Internationally-famous Chinese film actress, Gong Li
became a household name with the film Red Sorghum, followed by "Raise the
Red Lantern", "The Story of Qiuju" and "To Live" all of which have won
international film competitions. She won the Best Actress Award at the
49th Venice International Movie Festival, became the first Chinese movie
star to serve as chairperson on the Evaluation Commission at the 50th
Berlin Movie Festival. She has also received the title of "peace promoting
artist" from UNESCO and became Goodwill Ambassador in May last year. She
married a Sinaporean businessman in February 1996.
