    Man critically shot, police fire tear gas in U.S. riot-hit town

　　FERGUSON, United States, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- A man was shot and was critically wounded in Ferguson early Sunday despite a night curfew imposed in the riot-hit town in the U.S. Midwest state of Missouri.

　　Police made seven arrests and fired tear gas into crowds early Sunday morning. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson stressed that the police action was not to enforce the curfew, but to respond to a call of people inside a barbecue store.

　　"I was disappointed in the actions of tonight," Johnson told reporters.

　　Johnson told an early Sunday press conference that the police's initial strategy for the night was to have officers tour the streets, and protect local businesses.

　　But police obtained information that there were protesters on the roof of a barbecue store, lying in wait for police. A SWAT unit was called and tear gas was fired to assist in moving a large crowd back.

　　Meanwhile, a man was reportedly shot but not by the police. The shooting victim was transported to the hospital by a private car and was in critical condition.

　　Sunday marks the eighth day of protests in Ferguson after the fatal shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown by a white police officer. Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Ferguson on Saturday after the protests turned violent the night before.
