4 prosecuted in Urumqi syringe attacks
Intro:
Four suspects who were captured amid the syringe attack scare in Urumqi have been prosecuted for endangering public security, local procuratorate said Saturday.
Pkg:
The four, all from the Uygur ethnic group, were involved in three cases, said Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of the city's procuratorate.
SOUNDBITE: Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of Urumqi procuratorate "Based on the evidence we gathered, we think they (the syringe attackers) are pre-organized."
Muhutaerjiang Turdi, a 34-year-old man, and Aimannisha Guli, a 22-year-old woman, threatened a taxi driver with a syringe and robbed him of 710 yuan (104 U.S. dollars) on Aug. 29. The two were seeking money to buy drugs.
The woman was captured on the same day of the robbery and the man surrendered to police three days after, said the procurator general.
In another case, a man named Yilipan Yilihamu, 19, was captured on Aug. 28, hours after a woman reported to police that she was stabbed at a roadside fruit stall. Yilipan confessed to police that he inserted a pin into the woman's buttock.
Akbar Imin, a 47-year-old man, injured police when he resisted arrest with a syringe that contained drug on Aug. 31. The procurator general did not say how many police officers were injured in the case.
SOUNDBITE: Wutkur Abdurahman, procurator general of Urumqi procuratorate "The procuratorate will implement the sacred duty of law, handle the cases strictly in accordance with the law and process the cases like the public security department's appeals for arrest warrant or case transfers as early as possible. We'll never let people down and will try all out to safeguard social justice, dignity of law and maintain social and political stability."
Wutkur Abdurahman said the procuratorate has also approved the arrest of four other suspects.
Urumqi syringe attacks victims examined
Intro:
Chinese military medical experts on Saturday said that it was too early to say victims in recent syringe attacks in Urumqi City had been contracted diseases related to radioactive substance, anthrax and toxic chemical as rumors had it.
Pkg:
"Normally, the latent period of these diseases range from months to a year," said Qian Jun, director of Disease Control and Biological Security Office with China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences, at a press conference here. "They should be closely observed."
Qian said he, along with other five medical experts with the General Logistics Department of Chinese People's Liberation Army, had examined 217 medical records of victims since Friday.

By Thursday, local hospitals had dealt with 531 victims of hypodermic syringe stabbings, 106 of whom showed obvious signs of needle attacks. Qian said further identification was underway and they were giving psychological counseling to some victims.
Investigation had showed those involved in the syringe attacks were from the Uygur ethnic group while those attacked included people from Han and other ethnic groups.
Bus services restored in Urumqi
Intro:
Bus services suspended in a traffic controlled area of Urumqi, capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, were restored Saturday.
Pkg:
The regional government imposed a traffic ban in the downtown area to the south of Xinyi Road on Thursday after tens of thousands of people in Urumqi took to streets to protest against syringe attacks.
Though the ban was still effective as of Saturday's 12:00 a.m., public transport services including buses and taxies were allowed in the traffic controlled area.
Soundbite: A citizen of Urumqi "There were no buses to take yesterday." Journalist:"How about today?" "Bus route to the South Gate was restored today." Journalist:"Which station did you get on?" "I got on at Medical College Station and got off at the South Gate Station." Journalist:"Is everything all right all the way?" "Yes, yes, everything is all right."
A traffic ban was imposed in the area to the south of Xinyi Road since 21:00 p.m. of Thursday. To lessen the impact of the traffic ban, buses, taxies and some other public services vehicles were allowed to drive in the area today.
Soundbite: Zhang Fan, a chief of staff of a certain unity of Chinese People's Armed Police Force "Buses, taxies, ambulances and some other public services vehicles are allowed to drive in the area now. Private vehicles with emergencies are also allowed. But the traffic ban in the area is still effective to most of the vehicles in order to guarantee the traffic order."
Chinese officials accused ethnic separatists of instigating the syringe attacks with purpose of undermining ethnic unity. Syringe stabbings carried out since Aug. 20 have resulted in panic and resentment from the public, officials said.

In Sunday morning, most morning markets in Urumqi opened as usual. Many residents went to the markets to buy meat, vegetables and fruits. Prices are returning to normal.
A/H1N1 cases in China
Intro:
Fears are mounting as there has been a rise in A/H1N1 confirmed cases across the country. China News brings you the latest figures, and measures being taken to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
PKG:
The seventh death from the A/H1N1 virus has been reported in Hong Kong, Saturday and dozens of cases have been reported across the Chinese mainland.
The female patient, was admitted to Hong Kong's Princess Margaret Hospital Friday.
A spokesperson at the hospital said the 73 year old had a history of Thalassemia.
She attended the Accident and Emergency Department for septic shock and flu symptoms and was admitted to the isolation ward soon after.
Her condition rapidly deteriorated and she was announced dead after 9.00pm Friday.
It is the seventh reported death in Hong Kong.
In Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region an A/H1N1 case was reported on Saturday.
Sources with the regional Public Health Department said a middle school student was confirmed to have the virus Saturday.
By Saturday night 42 other cases were reported in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang.
In south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 25 new cases were confirmed in the region by Friday.
Two schools that reported the outbreaks of the flu, have been suspended.
And in Shanghai a patient infected with A/H1N1 has been diagnosed as being in "severe condition".
The case was reported at the Shanghai Municipal No. 1 People's Hospital.
The Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau have not given an update on the patient since a brief statement was made on Friday.
Schools and universities across the country are taking measures to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
Friday, the Health Ministry said the Chinese mainland has reported 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu, of which 3,577 have recovered.

Inflation measures

Government officials have said that the price hike of agricultural goods will not cause inflation.
The Information Office of State Council said Friday that the country has sufficient reserves of grain and other farm produce, so the recent price rise should not dramatically affect consumers.
Severe drought swept through the north of the country this summer, which has affected seasonal grain output.
The decline of corn, which is the main source of fodder, may lead to price hikes of fodder, and even of the animal and aquatic products.
Chen Xiwen, deputy director of Central Financial and Economic Leading Group and director of Central Rural Work Leading Group said the government will adopt a series of regulations and measures if necessary to keep the price stable.
Oil leaks in S China
Intro: A PetroChina Fushan oilfield has leaked dangerous oil in south China's Hainan Province killing animals and endangering crops in the area. China News bring you the details,
PKG:
An aged pipeline is reportedly responsible for a dangerous oil leak in south China's Hainan Province.
The flammable leakage occurred Saturday and has already destroyed 13-hectares of farmland around the PetroChina Fushan oilfield. Dead fish were reportedly seen in polluted waters around the area.
Police were posted at the scene, as the leaked oil is highly flammable.
An official with PetroChina, Hainan branch said the aged pipeline has been fixed and resumes normal transmission.

Gas blast accidents decline
VO:
Gas blast accidents and deaths in China have declined over the past 4 years.
According to a National Mining Gas Control Conference in Nanchang this weekend gas blast accidents have decreased by over 50%, and deaths by over 60% since 2005.
In 2005 a national supervision campaign was introduced to monitor and control the problem.
Luo Lin, chief of the State Administration of Work Safety said that compared with the same period of last year, accidents had decreased by 16% and the death toll by 12%, from January to July this year.
Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang said, Friday, efforts should be made to improve work safety nationwide in a move to create a stable work safety environment and for a fast and steady economic development.
Fight against corruption
CAM:
China's judicial agencies have extended the focus of corruption targets to bribe givers, in a bid to uproot corruption.
Prosecutors have now expanded a so-called 'blacklist' of bribers.
The blacklist database, which covers the country's bribers convicted by Chinese courts since 1997, was opened for public scrutiny earlier this month.
Individuals or organizations can refer to the blacklist of bribe cases, to see if their candidates have any record of bribery.
National library 100 years
CAM:
The National Library of China will turn 100 on Wednesday.
In the lead up to the anniversary, the library is holding a special and rare collection exhibition.
The exhibits include nine treasure pieces of oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang Dynasty, from 1600-1046 BC.
The library was opened by the Qing dynasty government on September 9th, 1909. It is the third largest library in the world.
National Day holiday travel forecast

China is preparing itself for a travel spree in the upcoming National Day holiday. Despite the rising fear of the A/H1N1 influenza, a brighter economic outlook means more Chinese are thinking about travelling for the 8 day so-called Golden-week holiday.
The Chinese Tourism Academy said it is expected domestic travel will increase by 13% compared to last year, to about 200 million.
U.S. congressman congratulates New China

Praise for new China was heard this week, in a far away part of the world. China News takes you to Barack Obama's home town, Chicago.
Pkg: A Chicago-based US congressman has expressed his wishes to Xinhua Friday.
Congressman Danny K. Davis said he wishes all of the Chinese community, in Chicago, China and all over the world a happy 60th anniversary.
Soundbite: Danny K. Davis: US congressman "Many of the people that I interacted with, although they have acquired American citizenship, their hearts remain in China. They have all kinds of events and activities to proclaim and display their Chinese cultural heritage. Many of the people I know here have a love for China and also for America too."
Davis was excited about his most recent trip to China, describing it as "a wonderful experience."
It was his third visit to China. He said although there were still many bicycles he was surprised how many new brand cars there were in the streets.

Davis: US congressman "The last two times I have been in China, one could tell that the quality of life and the quality of living is moving upward in China, as well as it is moving in other underdeveloping nations but I don't think they are anywhere near being at a greater rate or in a more massive way as China."

Long March 6 carrier rockets

The China National Space Administration said it has started developing the Long March 6 carrier rockets for its space programs.
The rockets will be non-toxic and pollution-free.
They are expected to be ready for blast off in 2013.
The payload capacity, or specific space program of the rockets has not been revealed.
Medical team to Senegal to return home
Intro: A Chinese medical team has been given a sincere goodbye from the people of Senegal. China News shows you why.

A Chinese medical team is returning home from West African country, Senegal after a two-year mission in the developing country.
The Ministry of Health of Senegal Thursday held a farewell party for the medical team, China's 12th medical assistance team to the country.
Representative of Health Ministry of Senegal said at the ceremony that the Chinese medical team helped relieve sufferings for Senegalese people with their high medical skills and contributed to bilateral cooperation.
The 16-person medical team has been working in Pikine Hospital in the suburbs of Dakar, capital of Senegal since September 2007.
Liu Jianzhong, team leader of the medical envoy, said that his team had launched various kinds of new medical technologies and 4 large-scale volunteer medical consultations in Senegal.
The team has given medical treatment to about 24,000 patients.

New aircraft project
INTRO: A new project to build large aircraft is underway in China. China News takes you to Hubei province,
PKG:
A new project is underway at the Special Vehicle Research Institute to develop large amphibious aircraft, the first of it's kind in China.
The Institute, based in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province said the giant aircraft will be used for fire extinction and water based rescues.
Specifically the aircraft will be used for fire control, shipwreck rescue, maritime environment supervision, maritime rights protection, and long-range transportation.
The Institute said the current domestic market need of the aircraft is estimated at 50, and the figure will rise to 150 in the next 15 years.
Amphibious aircraft can take off and touch down on both land and water. The Institute's project will also have first aid facilities on the aircraft, so that 50 people will be saved at any one time.

China-donated school in Darfur
CAM:
A primary school in Darfur, donated by the Chinese embassy to Sudan, was completed and put into use on Saturday.
Located in Nyala, capital of South Darfur state, the school has 32 classrooms, six teachers' offices, 600 sets of chairs and desks, and a small football pitch.
The school was constructed by the engineering troops of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in Darfur.
The Deputy Governor of South Darfur said the school the best gift the local people have received.
Nuke-used zirconium materials production project
CAM:
China is building its first nuke-used zirconium materials production project.
The facility is being constructed at the high-tech zone of Baoji city in Shaanxi province.
The project, with a total investment of about 380 million US dollars, is expected to reduce China's reliance on imports of zirconium materials.
It is scheduled to start production in October 2011.
Economic restructuring

Shanghai is making its economic structure a priority to achieve sustainable gains in the city's economic growth.
Shanghai's Vice Mayor Tu Guangshao said Saturday the city is prepared to sacrifice a bit of economic growth if necessary.
Shanghai's economy grew in the second quarter, pushing the growth rate in the first half of 2009 to 5.6 percent.
He said Shanghai is gearing up to be a city boasting modern services and an advanced manufacturing sector.
Automotive forum
Intro: An automotive forum has opened in Tianjin. China News takes you there,

The International Forum on Chinese Automotive Industry Development started on Friday in Tianjin.
The forum, called, the "Financial Crisis and the Readjustment and Revitalization of Chinese Automotive Industry", attracted more than 600 government officials, academics and industry practitioners.
Attendees exchanged opinions on how to help China's auto industry survive and thrive from the current global economic crisis.
The forum is coorganized by China Automotive Technology and Research Center, China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, and China Automotive News Agency.
It has been held for five consecutive years in Tianjin.

Shanghai snooker tournament

STORYLINE: The 2009 Roewe Shanghai Masters will start on Monday in Shanghai.
The world snooker tournament will be played at the Shanghai Grand Stage.
Snooker greats including Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins and Steven Hendry are all attending.
Ding Junhui, a rising Chinese star, is also among the 32 players to compete in the seven-day event.

More than 1, 000 performers and musicians delighted Russian audiences at Red Square, Moscow on the weekend for the first Russian international military music festival, Saturday.
The five day festival, was opened by Russian president Demitry Medvedev.
The festival is a medium of cultural exchange and military promotion.
Crowd highlights included a performance by martial players from China Shaolin Temple.
Red flags, amazing Kung-fu performance and Chinese classical music stunned viewers and encouraged singing and dancing in the crowds.
The 70-monk show was the largest performance by Shaolin martial monks outside of China.

Charm Performances of Minnan Region

China News takes you to a coastal city in southeast China's Fujian province to see a unique romantic performance, held this weekend.

Romantic Charm Performances of Minnan Region, featuring local cultures of Fujian and Taiwan, will be staged Sunday in Xiamen.
Part of the 5th Cross-Straits Travel Fair during the 13th China International Fair for Investment & Trade (CIFIT), the performance has been regarded as a tourism attraction. It is also scheduled to make it's debut soon in Xiamen Culture & Art Center.
The one-hour performance consists of six acts, and collaborates unique cultural categories of both Fujian and Taiwan.
Included in the performances are aspects of tea culture, sea culture, Nanyin music, Gezaixi opera and Bobing game.
Xiong Jiwen, chief executive director of the performance, said the performance will help audiences know more about the local culture of Minnan region.

Vatternrundan China 2009 opens
Intro: A cycling competition has started in China this week. China News takes you to Yunnan Province.

The 2009 Vatternrundan China international cycling race was held on Saturday in Yuxi, Yunnan province.
More than 350 riders from over 10 countries and regions participated in the cycle around Yuxi lake.
The 175.5-kilometer road race started and ended in Nie'er Cultural Square of Yuxi.
Australian rider Darren Benson won the game by 4 hours 50 minutes and 44 seconds, followed by British rider David John Tonks and Chinese cyclist Liu Min.
Vatternrundan, Sweden is the largest recreational bicycle race in the world. In June every year riders cycle around the second largest in-land lake, Vattern, in Sweden.

The 5th Northeast Asia Investment and Trade Expo ended Sunday in Changchun, with agreements signed worth more than 171 billion yuan or about 25 billion US dollars.
The expo provided local residents and tourists an opportunity to learn about customs and cultures of various countries, and to buy special commodities.
A sales promotion could be seen in the Thailand pavilion on the last day of the exhibition, attracting thousands of people from home and abroad.
