Hello and welcome to China News. I'm Nie Danyangzhi in Beijing.
Urumqi returns to normal

Syringe attacks vicious crime: jurists
Intro:
Jurists in Urumqi, the capital city of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Sunday slammed the syringe attacks in the city as vicious crimes with purpose of jeopardizing state safety.
Pkg:
Soundbite: Yang Zheng, executive director of Xinjiang Crime Science Association
"This (syringe attack) is a vicious crime with purposes of jeopardizing state safety and public security as well as endangering people's life and property. It is another sabotage masterminded by the "three forces" (of extremism, separatism and terrorism) after the July 5 riot. The attack seemed to be a simple case with no specific target, but it aimed at creating social chaos and fear. The ultimate purpose is to sabotage the national unity, the stability in Xinjiang and to split Xinjiang (from China)."
In the wake of the syringe attacks, an expert team sent by the Academy of Military Medical Sciences arrived in Urumqi to examine the syringe attack victims. So far, medical experts have not found evidence showing the victims had infectious diseases.
Although most of the injured have no obvious signs of illness, the syringe attack is still regarded by jurists as a felony because it is an overt act of jeopardizing state safety.
Soundbite: Lian Zhenhua, researcher with Law Institute of Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences "Perils of the crime (syringe attack) lie in the consequences and social responses rather than the degrees of victims' injuries. It's not a simple isolated incident but another sabotage by separatists following the July 5 riot. Although the syringe attack and the July 5 riot are different in forms, they have the same vicious purposes of endangering state safety and public security."
Considering the malicious motive behind the crime, Yang Zheng suggested a quick settlement on the syringe crimes.
Soundbite: Yang Zheng, executive director of Xinjiang Crime Science Association "Police should quicken the detection and investigation on syringe attacks. Coordination among all police sorts and departments are needed in fighting against the vicious crime."
By Friday, Xinjiang police had captured 25 syringe attackers, of whom seven are in police custody, four were arrested and four others were referred for criminal prosecution.
Syringe attacks carried out since Aug. 20 have resulted in panic and resentment from the public. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets last Thursday to protest against the syringe attacks and demand security guarantees. The situation is now under control.
