SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- A porter working with Indian military was wounded in a militant attack near Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, officials said Sunday.

According to Indian military officials, the attack was carried out in Sabjian sector of frontier Poonch, about 185 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A group of militants trying to infiltrate inside Indian territory fired on troops yesterday evening, which resulted in wounding a porter accompanying them," a military official said. "Troops also retaliated to the firing from militants."

Following the attack the military has launched a search operation to trace the militants.

Meanwhile, the military has sounded an alert along the LoC to prevent militants from infiltrating into Indian-controlled Kashmir, India's official broadcaster, All India Radio (AIR) said Sunday.

"In the wake of unprecedented increase in infiltration attempt and attack on army camp, a strong counter infiltration grid had been put in place along entire LoC in the region," the broadcaster said.

"Being unable to infiltrate into the Indian territory, it is believed militants have adopted strategy to attack on army camps and posts close to LoC."

The step is believed to have been taken in wake of increase in militants attacks near LoC.

On Wednesday, three militants and a civilian were killed, while an Indian trooper was wounded in a militant attack on Indian military camp at Tangdhar area of Kupwara district, northwest of Srinagar.

A prolonged gunfight and search operation is ongoing in Manigah forests of the district for past four weeks. The stand-off so far has left a military officer dead and a few others wounded. A militant was also killed in the stand-off.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian- controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfights between the two sides take place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
