The 69 Series tank
China began to design its own tanks in 1960. Technologies like laser range finders and two-way stabilizers had been mastered. Drawing on features of the 59 Series, the independently designed medium-sized 1969 Series appeared on March 26, 1974.
The 69 Series tank weighed 36.5 tonnes and boasted a 12-cylinder V diesel engine. New cannons, fire control systems and night vision equipment improved the firepower, mobility and night combat capabilities. The configuration of the 69 Series was similar to that of the 59 Series.
