MOSCOW, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Defense industry must immediately start to replace foreign-made components with domestically- produced ones, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday.
"Import replacement of the parts and components of weaponry and military hardware must start," Putin told a government meeting on the development of the national defense forces in Sochi.
Putin stressed that imported components should be substituted by Russia-made high-quality innovative products.
"Domestic companies must gain new technologies competence, including dual-purpose technologies," Putin said, adding that Russian production must be superior to foreign one in quality and price.
He said that by 2020 Russian armed forces' equipment should be modernized by at least 70 percent, which should be fully implemented even in unfavorable development circumstances.
"Money must be spent with maximum efficiency. Costs should be cut, production processes optimized and well-coordinated," Interfax news agency quoted Putin as saying.
New types of military armaments and special hardware have been identified and would be supplied to the army and navy in the next decade, according to Putin.
The president added that virtually all government defense targets for 2014 have been met.
The Russian government has earmarked 20 trillion rubles (about 414 billion dollars) for the massive rearmament program until 2020.
