Czech military chief of staff visits Vietnam to boost defense ties

    HANOI, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chief of the General Staff of Czech Republic's Armed Forces Petr Pavel is on an official visit to Vietnam to boost bilateral defense ties and boost the development of traditional friendship between the two countries' armies and peoples.

    The tour of the Czech high-level military delegation headed by Pavel from Thursday to Sunday is made at the invitation of Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff of the People's Army of Vietnam, said a press release by Vietnam's Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Friday.

    Through the visit, Vietnam and Czech Republic will inform each other of socio-economic, defense, security development situations in each country, share experience on developing armed forces as well as assess regional and world issues of common interest, said the press release.

    In addition, the two sides will discuss future measures to promote bilateral defense cooperation, with a focus on exchanges of high-level delegations, training, military industry, scientific research, military technology, maintenance of weapons and technical equipments among others.

    Based on agreed areas after discussions, relevant agencies of the two defense ministries will build and soon sign an action plan on bilateral defense cooperation, which aims at effectively implementing contents in Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation between the two defense ministries, said the press release.

    After the official welcome ceremony at the MoD's Headquarters on Friday morning in capital Hanoi, Senior Lieutenant General Do Ba Ty held talks with General Petr Pavel.

    The Czech delegation is scheduled to pay courtesy call on Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh, visit Hanoi-based Command of Vietnam's Air Force and Air Defense, Vietnam's Military Technical Academy, northern Ha Long Bay as well as historical and cultural relics in Hanoi, said the press release.
