NANJING, December 13 (ChinaMil) – A total of 93 senior cadets from 11 foreign military academies and 8 domestic military academies attended the 5th Army International Cadets Week held at the University of Science and Technology (UST) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from October 29 to November 6, 2013.

Approved by the General Staff Headquarters (GSH) of the PLA, the Army International Cadets Week is held every other year in a bid to build up an exchange platform for the officer-to-be students in different countries.

Keynote address is the “required content” designed in each Army International Cadets Week. It is divided into two parts: speech and debate. Cadet-representatives from each country take turns to deliver the keynote address on the stage and answer a series of questions.

This year, the keynote address was somewhat different from the previous ones. The speaker was not notified beforehand until a half day was left for him to make preparation for it.

On the afternoon of October 31 when the cadet-representatives of each country appeared one by one on the podium of the conference hall, reporters witnessed on the site that the Chinese cadet Zhang Kaifang’s speech on “Significance of Leadership for Future Officers” and his each response to questions drew loud applause from all the cadets.

Reporters also discovered from observation that no matter whether it was in a speech made in public or an exchange in private, either on the sports ground or on the training ground, those Chinese “officers-to-be” were always so active and self-confident.

In the past, the exchange between Chinese and foreign cadets used to rely on translation, but now whenever the reporter needs to exchange with foreign cadets, Chinese cadets are all able to play the role of temporary interpreters. In the past, Chinese cadets were so passive in the interaction with foreign cadets, but now they are so ready to intermingle with them on first meeting, looking as if they were old acquaintances.

The credit of this change goes to the frequent exchange and interaction between Chinese and foreign military academies. The leader of the UST told reporters that the UST receives multiple foreign military visiting delegations every year and sends dozens of instructors and cadets to foreign military academies for visit and study.

It is under the push of a series of Chinese-foreign exchange activities, such as the Army International Cadets Week, Chinese-foreign military academy president (commandant) seminars and exchanges, global voyage and so on, that Chinese military academies are marching step by step towards the world.

International simulation battalion of UST in military subject competition

Cadets from Chinese military colleges and academies showed their strong leadership in the international simulation battalion.

It is learned that the cadets managed the international simulation battalion in which they trained themselves as well. The cadets from Chinese military colleges and academies were responsible for the arrangements of all the activities of the Army International Cadets Week, which was carried out in a busy but orderly manner.

Ignacio, a cadet from the National Military Academy of Argentina, said in an interview that “The backbone Chinese cadets are excellent, as they organized many meaningful activities.”

The first competition on military subjects among colleges and academies under the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was held on November 1, 2013 at the PLA University of Science and Technology (UST). One day before the competition, cadets of the international simulation battalion were invited by the UST for the “Military Skill Cup” Competition.

The invitation for the competition was hailed by the Chinese and foreign cadets of the international simulation battalion and cadets from Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, the UK, Argentina and Japan applied for the participation. Finally, two combined combat squads consisting of 20 Chinese and foreign cadets from the international simulation battalion were picked out for the competition.

In the orienteering cross-country race subject, Jason, a cadet from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst of the UK, raised doubt about the way of “taking the narrow road instead of the wide one and taking the rugged road rather than the flat one” and held that this was the most dangerous practice in real-combat. His suggestion was adopted. As a result, the team members of the international simulation battalion took the most difficult byway.

During the rescue for the wounded, a scene that Rollinco, a cadet from the Royal Military Academy of the Netherlands, kept talking with the wounded attracted attention from others. Later on, Rollinco explained that his talking with the wounded was to acquire more information for making a targeted rescue plan.

After the competition, Wang Bo, a cadet from the UST, told reporters that he would submit proposals to the management authority of his university to gear some confrontation subjects towards the reality in battlefields.

Reporters believed that the follow-up stories of the Chinese and foreign cadets from the international simulation battalion in their competition for the “Military Skill Cup” will be more wonderful…

The picture shows that Richard, a cadet from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst of the UK, and Steven, a cadet from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, came to visit Cai Wenwei, an instructor of the UST, in his house on the evening of October 31, 2013. (Chinamil.com.cn / Gao Shichen)
