DJAKARTA, December 17 (ChinaMil) -- Purnomo Yusgiantoro, minister of defense of Indonesia, held talks with Chang Wanquan, the visiting member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), state councilor and minister of national defense of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), on December 16, 2013 in Djakarta, capital of Indonesia.

The two sides exchanged their views on issues of common concern such as regional security situation and the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

Chang Wanquan said that the visit is aimed at implementing the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on strengthening bilateral exchanges and cooperation in defense and military fields, so as to push forward in-depth development of the military-to-military relations.

The Chinese side is willing to work together with the Indonesian side to further strengthen high-level exchanges, maintain consultations and dialogues, deepen joint training, personnel training, contacts among young and middle-aged officers, and exchanges in professional fields, promote cooperation in national defense industry, and strengthen multilateral security cooperation, Chang Wanquan continued.

Purnomo said that the defense and military relations between the two countries have been constantly maturing in recent years, and under the current complex and volatile international situation, the two sides are supposed to further strengthen friendly exchanges and cooperation, so as to promote the development of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership.

Chang Wanquan stressed that China hopes for no turbulence stirred up in the South China Sea. To maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea rests not only with China’s efforts, but also with efforts of all parties concerned. We should be sober-minded and fully alert to attempts to undermine regional peace and tranquility.

Chang Wanquan expressed that the dispute over the Diaoyu Islands is at the heart of the East China Sea issue. The Chinese side is fully justified in setting up the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Some countries’ words and deeds aimed at taking advantage of the issue to deliberately arouse regional opposition will bring nothing but harm. China’s will and determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and security is firm and also indisputable.

At the invitation of Purnomo, Chang Wanquan arrived in Indonesia on December 15 for an official goodwill visit. Liu Jianchao, Chinese ambassador to Indonesia, attended the above activities.
