Obama cancels fundraisers to deal with debt crisis   2011-07-25 23:46:55 FeedbackPrintRSS

WASHINGTON, July 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's reelection campaign has canceled about half a dozen political fundraisers for the president to concentrate on negotiations to raise the federal debt ceiling and avoid a disastrous government default, U.S. media said Monday.

The ABC news reported Obama had to cancel plans for fundraisers in California and Washington state in recent weeks, along with an event in New York. Events for Vice President Joe Biden scheduled to take place in three cities across the South have also been canceled.

An uncertain fate awaits a fundraising celebration for Obama's 50th birthday in his hometown Chicago. He might not be able to attend on Aug. 3, a day before the birthday and one day after the default deadline for the debt ceiling. The cancellations were first reported by the Chicago Sun Times. Obama has said in a recent interview he wants a debt deal for his birthday.

On Monday night, one fundraiser in a private home in Washington D.C. was canceled, and another in a hotel will get Biden instead of a presidential appearance.
