BAGHDAD, July 20 (Xinhua) -- A gunman was killed in an attack on an Awakening Council group members in west of Baghdad on Wednesday, while a bomb explosion in western the capital wounded three people, the police said.
Unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by members of a local Awakening Council group in Abu Ghraib area, some 20 km west of Baghdad, sparking a clash between the attackers and the group members, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack resulted in the killing of a gunman and the capture of another, while a group member was also wounded by the clash, the source said.
The Awakening Council group, or al-Sahwa in Arabic, consists of armed groups, including some powerful anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent groups, who fought al-Qaida group militants in the Sunni Arab areas during the years after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
In a separate incident, a roadside bomb ripped through Amriyah district in western Baghdad wounded three people, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Insurgent attacks continue in the once volatile Sunni Arab area in west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
