Kuwait bans vegetable, fruit imports from Germany, Spain

KUWAIT CITY, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait on Wednesday imposed a ban on imports of vegetables and fruits from Germany and Spain amid fears of the deadly E. coli outbreak in Europe.

The official KUNA news agency reported the country will beef up surveillance starting from Thursday at airports and seaports to detect any infection cases among arrivals .

The country also established a panel made up of health, agriculture and environment officials to oversee the issue.

On Saturday, Qatar also stopped imports of cucumber, tomato and lettuce from Germany and Spain.

Until Wednesday, 25 deaths have been reported while the infection cases have increased more than 2,600 in 12 countries around the world.
