BOGOTA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos called for greater efforts in environmental protection during his visit to native communities in the north of the country on Sunday, the World Environment Day.

Santos praised people of Sierra Nevada communities for their culture based on respect for nature and environment and warned his fellow countrymen of the serious consequences of disappearing rain forest.

"The entire world must follow this advise because we cannot continue destroying the environment and the nature...," he said.

During the rainy season of the year 2010 and 2011, 448 people died and 3.1 million were made homeless in Colombia.
