HELSINKI, June 3 (Xinhua) -- One case of the E.coli (EHEC) bacterial infection has been diagnosed in Helsinki, the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare said Friday.
The properties of the E. coli bacteria found in the patient are similar to those exhibited by the deadly bacteria in Germany. The patient has been in Germany recently and is now recovering, the institute said.
Mari Kanerva, infection specialist from the institute recommended those who had travelled to Germany to follow instructions from local authorities.
"If you have bloody diarrhoea after a trip to Germany, then you should seek help from a health center immediately," Kanerva said.
The epidemic caused by the deadly E. coli bacteria, which was first identified in Germany last week, has killed 17 Germans and one Swede and infected over 2,000 people in 12 European countries.
