NEW YORK, May 15 (Xinhua) -- IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was formally charged here with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment following a complaint by a hotel maid, local police said here early Sunday.
The indictment may have destroyed the chance for the widely-believed strong hopeful to challenge French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012.
The IMF, which is headquartered in Washington, said on Sunday that the organization is fully functioning and operational despite the arrest of its chief, CNN reported.
The lawyer representing the 62-year-old said earlier that the IMF chief will plead not guilty to all the charges, reports said.
Strauss-Kahn, head of the International Monetary Fund, was arrested in New York City on accusations of sexually attacking a maid at the Sofitel New York hotel earlier in the day.
Three Port Authority detectives pulled Strauss-Kahn from his plane's first-class cabin at John F. Kennedy International Airport just two minutes before it was due to depart for Paris.
It is reported that the alleged attack took place when the maid entered Strauss-Kahn's presumedly unoccupied suite. But when she walked in the room, Strauss-Kahn came out of the bathroom naked and attempted to sexually assault her.
