Netherlands doesn't recognize transitional government in Libya   2011-05-05 22:50:00 FeedbackPrintRSS

THE HAGUE, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A claim that The Netherlands would recognize the rebel group established by the Libyan National Transitional Council as the official representative of Libya is false, Dutch officials say.

Just before the Libya summit in Rome, a spokesman for the Libyan rebels, Mahmoud Shammam, told Reuters that the Dutch government had recognized the Libyan National transitional Council as the legally recognized authority in the country.

He also claimed that Spain and Denmark had done the same.

"That message is not correct," a spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said to Reuters.

Denmark has also denied recognizing the rebels as the official representatives of the country.

This week Italy and France did recognize the rebel group. Italy has called upon other NATO countries to do the same.
