COTABATO CITY, the Philippines, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Three construction workers were killed and another one was wounded Friday in an attack staged by leftist rebels in the gold-copper rich township of Tampakan in southern Philippines, officials said Saturday.
Regional police spokesman Chief Inspector Alexis Yap said that 10 gunmen, believed New Peoples Army rebels, ambushed a convoy of five trucks at around 01:30 p.m. local time in the village of Danlag, leaving three workers of a construction company dead. Another man was wounded in the attack.
Troops were sent to the area to hunt down the perpetrators.
The NPA has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. Military estimated that the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in over 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.
