DAMASCUS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed Wednesday in an armed attack against a medical team near al-Omari Mosque in southern Syrian town of Daraa, official news agency SANA reported.

An armed gang attacked the medical team in an ambulance while it was driving past an area near al-Omari Mosque.

Two medical staff and the driver were killed. A member of the security forces was also killed while the forces stationed close to the site fought the attackers and arrested some of them, the report said.

Armed gangs in Daraa have stored weapons inside al-Omari Mosque, and threatened the safety of residents in the houses adjacent to the mosque, the reports quoted an official source as saying.

The source said the security forces will continue to pursue the armed gangs and brought them to justice.
