TOKYO, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Japanese police rescued an 80-year- old woman and a 16-year-old boy from under debris in Ishinomaki City of northeastern Miyagi Prefecture on Sunday, nine days after the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami, the NHK reported.

Local police said the two were found in an area about one kilometer upstream of the mouth of a river, according to the public broadcaster. The rescue workers said the boy has a low body temperature, but is conscious.

The two were sent to a Red Cross hospital in Ishinomaki by a police helicopter.
