ISLAMABAD, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed Thursday evening when two U.S. drones fired missiles into the northwestern Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan, local sources said.

In the first strike, four missiles were fired at a suspected militants hideout at the Data Khel area near Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan locals said.

Shortly after the attack killed four people, a second pilotless aircraft landed two missiles at the same area, targeting a vehicle and killing two people near the border with Afghanistan.

Since Thursday afternoon, five U.S. drones have been flying over the tribal area of North Waziristan and tribal men were firing with mortars and heavy guns trying to shoot them down, local sources told Xinhua.

The U.S drones regularly hit hideouts of the militants in the Pakistani tribal region, which Washington considers as the center of Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants. Pakistan opposes the U.S. strikes inside the country's tribal regions and seeks the drone technology. But the U.S. does not accept Islamabad's request.
