GAZA, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Violence has been mounting after Israeli warplanes carried out retaliatory airstrikes on the Gaza Strip following militants launched rockets into Israel, leaving 10 Palestinians wounded, medics and witnesses said on Wednesday.

According to the witnesses, after Gaza militants fired four makeshift projectiles from the coastal enclave at southern Israeli communities, Israeli F-16 war jets flew intensively over the strip and several explosions were heard in central and northern the strip.

Adham Abu Selmeya, spokesman of the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, told reporters that 10 Palestinians were injured during the three successive Israeli airstrikes.

The witnesses said ambulances, rescue teams and firefighters have rushed to the targeted areas and evacuated the wounded to nearby hospitals.

The first airstrike, which was carried out around midnight, was against an empty area southeast of Gaza City's Zeitoon neighborhood, no injuries were reported, but damages were caused to some houses in the neighborhood, said the witnesses.

The second one was carried out on a goldsmith shop in a densely populated area in Salah al-Dein road in northern Gaza Strip, the witnesses said, adding that the shop was completely destroyed, leaving at least eight local residents wounded.

Security sources said an adjacent medicine store, a carpentry and a factory that makes nylon products were badly damaged by the fire.
