COLOMBO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- At least three were killed with over 43,000 marooned in the flooding caused by heavy rains in the north, north central and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, officials said on Thursday.
"There are 51 camps housing 10,043 people in the Ampara, Trincomalee, and Vavuniya districts", Pradeep Kodippily, a top disaster management official said.
Commenting on the damage caused to housing, Kodippily said some 702 houses have been fully destroyed while 3,310 more were partly damaged.
The department of irrigation said sluice gates of many reservoirs have been opened as most reached spill levels.
Gayana Hendawitharana, a meteorologist said over 100 milimeters of rains had been recorded in the east.
All schools in the North Central Province will remain closed Thursday, Chief Minister Berty Dissanayake said.
Sri Lanka has been experiencing a wet patch since November and the weather department says the wet conditions with heavy rains would be continued until May.
The island country was hit by massive floods early January, with over a million people affected and dozens killed.
