2.4 tons of hashish seized in southeastern Turkey

ANKARA, July 31 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish gendarmerie seized 2.4 tons of hashish in 18 separate operations in southeastern Turkey on Saturday, an official statement said.

The statement issued by governor's office of Diyarbakir province said two suspects were detained in the operations.

According to the statement, the gendarmerie teams launched operations targeting some houses and fields in Ucari and Kayacik villages in Lice town of Diyarbakir province.

Turkey is a key transit route for smuggling drugs from Asia and the Middle East to markets in western Europe.
