LOS ANGELES, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Some 1,200 homes were evacuated Thursday as two wildfires broke out in suburban Los Angeles, authorities said.
The fires have burnt a total of nearly 2,430 hectares and destroyed an unknown number of structures by evening, said the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACFD). There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Aided by water-dropping helicopters, more than 800 firefighters were sent in to contain the fires, LACFD Inspector Matt Levesque said.
A series of brush fires have been sweeping parts of Southern California during the past few days.
In Kern County, 112 km north of Los Angeles, two wildfires have been raging for days, destroying an unknown number of homes in remote mountain communities.
But firefighters managed to build containment lines on Thursday as the weather turned cool and moist, said Pete Jankowski, a U.S. Forest Service information officer.
"The crews have made real good progress the last couple of days because of the weather," he said.
