JOHANNESBURG, July 29 (Xinhua) -- South Africa is set to abolish six tribal kingships created during the country's years of racial apartheid, it was announced on Thursday.

South African President Jacob Zuma said in Pretoria on Thursday that he was asking South African traditional communities to embark on a path of "acceptance, healing and reconciliation" after a recommendation by a traditional leadership commission.

According to the South African Press Association (SAPA), the commission recommended that South Africa lose six "royal" houses.

Announcing the findings of the South African Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims, Zuma said it was essential that the six kingships and queenships come to an end in order to "correct the wrongs of the past".

"The apartheid regime created its own traditional leadership at the expense of authentic leadership in some communities," Zuma said at a press conference.
