SAN FRANCISCO, July 18 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of 6.7 magnitude on the Richter scale hits off the coast of U.S. state Alaska Saturday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Sunday.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred at about 9:56 p.m. local time (0556 GMT) at a depth of 35 km, in the regions of Aleutian Islands, and was located 45 km west of Nikolski, Alaska.

"A damaging tsunami is not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska coasts," the U.S. West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.

7.1-magnitude quake hits Qinghai's Tibetan area

YUSHU, Qinghai, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit northwest China's Qinghai Province early on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

There have been casualties and house collapses, said residents and witnesses near the epicenter in the Yushu County, Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu.  Full story

Chile rattled by massive 8.3 magnitude earthquake

SANTIAGO, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A massive earthquake measuring 8.3 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Chile early on Saturday, knocking out power of houses and driving people in panic to the street.

A Xinhua reporter said telecommunications were severely disrupted, with almost all telephone and mobile phone calls unconnected.Full story

Magnitude-7.0 earthquake hits off Haiti

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A strong earthquake with a confirmed magnitude of 7.0 occurred on Tuesday near Haiti, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The epicenter was just 15 kilometers southwest of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to a statement on the USGS website.  Full story
