Backgrounder: Spy swaps between U.S., Russia

BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Russia on Friday swapped 14 alleged spies in Vienna, forging the biggest known post-Cold War spy swap between the two countries.

The United States swapped 10 Russian spies for four American spies.

Other known spy swaps conducted between the United States and Russia and the then Soviet Union included:

Feb. 11, 1986 - 3 Western spies and 1 Soviet prisoner exchanged for 5 east European spies over Glienicke Bridge near Berlin;

June 12, 1985 - 23 U.S. spies swapped for 3 Russian and 1 Polish spies over the same bridge near Berlin;

April 27, 1979 - 2 Russian spies exchanged for release of 5 Soviet prisoners in New York;

Oct. 11, 1963 - 2 American spies swapped for 2 Soviet spies;

Feb. 10, 1962 - 1 U.S. pilot exchanged for 1 Soviet spy over the Glienicke Bridge near Berlin.
