LOS ANGELES, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has made an arrest in the Grim Sleeper serial killings in South Los Angeles Wednesday, local media outlets reported.
Dozens of LAPD officers and other plain-cloth agents were seen standing near a South L.A. house the live footage by local television channel ABC7 shown. The killer is believed responsible for 11 deaths over the last three decades.
During a telephone interview with The Los Angeles Times, Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley identified the suspect as 51-year-old Lonnie David Franklin Jr.
DNA and ballistics evidence have connected the killings of 10 women and one man from 1985 to 2007, police said. The killer, billed as "Grim Sleeper," was given the moniker because he took a 14-year hiatus in his crimes after 1988.
The suspect killed again in 2002. He last struck on Jan. 1, 2007.
