WARSAW, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Bronislaw Komorowski, candidate of the Polish ruling party Civic Platform, won in Sunday's presidential runoff with 53.01 percent of the vote, the country's state election commission said on Monday.
Komorowski was born on June 4, 1952 in Oborniki Slaskie of southern Poland. His family later moved to a working class district of Warsaw.
Komorowski graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1977 with a history degree, and from 1977 to 1980 he was a news editor.
Since 1991, Komorowski has been serving as a member of the parliament. He has also held several government posts. He served as the defense minister from 2000 to 2001 and deputy speaker of the parliament's lower house from 2005 to 2007. He has been the parliament speaker since November 2007. He is also the No. 2 leader of the ruling party.
The pro-business, pro-European Union (EU) Civic Platform party chose Komorowski as its presidential candidate in March, weeks before a plane crash in Russia that killed former president Lech Kaczynski.
As speaker of the parliament, Komorowski acted as the president after the crash in accordance with the constitution. His first decision was to announce seven days of national mourning beginning on April 10. According to the constitution of Poland, Komorowski was required to set a date for the next presidential election within 14 days of assuming the position, the election date coming within 60 days of that announcement. On April 21, his office announced that the election would be held on June 20. In the election, he got 41.54 percent of the votes in the first round.
Komorowski is regarded as a center-right politician eager to push for political unity and a greater Polish presence in the EU.
He is married to Anna Dembowska and has five children.
