LISBON, July 2 (Xinhua) -- NATO will adopt a document on a new strategic concept at the Lisbon summit in November, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Friday.
The document will be related to the military alliance's mission in the coming decade, Rasmussen told a press conference in Lisbon after meeting Portuguese leaders on the summit preparation work.
NATO will basically continue to be an alliance of collective defense, but it will pursue different ways of action while working for the security of its member nations, Rasmussen said.
The alliance will protect its member nations against new threats such as possible missile attacks, international terrorism and internet security threats, he added.
The secretary general said NATO needs to adjust its strategies to the changes in the world, including seeking to develop relations with important partners in international security.
Rasmussen said he hoped the alliance would begin handing over the control of some Afghan provinces as early as November.
Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said the Lisbon summit slated for Nov. 18-19 will be historic, as leaders of the 28 NATO member nations will adopt the new strategy document at the meeting.
