RIO DE JANEIRO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim on Monday said the UN Security Council should make changes to reflect the current global situation.
Noting that the council's structure reflects the reality of 65 years ago, Amorim said the organization needed to be changed in order to be adequate to a new world.
"The reform is inevitable," he said. "If you ask me (when it will happen), I will not be able to say, but it is not plausible to keep it the way it is."
The minister also criticized the sanctions the Security Council recently approved against Iran over the Islamic republic's nuclear program.
The punitive measures came despite a swap deal Tehran had signed with Brazil and Turkey which would allow Iran to ship much of its 1.2 tons of low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for higher enriched uranium.
"The goal (of the agreement) was to build trust, but it was not taken into consideration," said Amorim, whose country and Turkey were the only countries that voted against the sanctions
The Brazilian minister stressed that despite the sanctions, the swap agreement was still in effect.
