BRASILIA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- A 54-year-old Brazilian man was arrested Wednesday for locking up and sexually abusing his daughter for nearly 15 years, police said.

Pereira, a farmer from Pinheiro, Maranhao state, had kept his daughter, who was first abused when she was 12, for 15 years in a self-made jail in a village not far from his house. With his daughter, he had fathered seven children, now aged between two months and 12 years old. Pereira's wife left the family many years ago.

All these children were left unattended without any clothes. Since all of them were illiterate, police had great difficulty communicating with them and convincing them to leave the place.

The case brought to daylight after an anonymous complaint was filed during a campaign against sexual abuse of children and adolescents.

Pereira now faces charges of setting up a private prison, rape of a vulnerable person, neglect and abuse.

The case recalls the story of Austrian engineer Josef Fritz, who kept his daughter prisoner for 24 years and had fathered seven children with her. That case was revealed two years ago and had global repercussions.
